ORIGIN OF THE TERM NET-ART
to apariciòn of the denominaciòn Net. Art is not so much a proper linguistic term of Internet, but his apariciòn in the Network was a fruit of an "accident".
In December, 1995, the Slovene artist Vuk Cosic received an anonymous e-mail.
Due to a software incompatibility, the text was an abracadabra in ascii practically illegibly.
The only fragment that had some sense was seen something like: [...] J8~g#| \; Net. Art {-^s1 [...]
Vuk Cosic remained very impressed: The network itself had provided a name to him for the activity in which it was involved. Immediately it began to use this term.
A few months later it forwarded the mysterious message to Igor Markovic, who managed descodificarlo correctly. The text turned out to be a vagrant and controversial manifesto where the author was blaming to the traditional artistic institutions of all the possible sins, declaring the freedom of the self-expression and the independence for the artist in Internet.
The term spread like a virus between the interconnected communities of Internet, and quickly it was assumed to describe a variety of daily activities. As definiciòn of Rachel Greene" The Net.art allows to come together and there to interact communications and graphs, e-mail, texts and images; facilitating that the artists, enthusiasts and critics of the tecnocultura exchange ideas, and share a common interest in the maintenance of a permanent dialogue. |
