THE MATERIALS

The materials to start are not difficult to find. Further on, with the experience and according to your favorite painting, they might be perfected.
At the moment, we need:

A crystal (any measurement is valid, but we recommend the size of a sheet of paper)

Role (of size bigger than that of the crystal) type watercolor or superalpha.

Materials of painting (brushes and painting, the oil is preferable but it can be acrylic, témpera...)

A soup spoon (or if you have chance of obtaining it, better a small roller).

THE MONOTYPE

l monotype is a simple form of engraving that, for not needing complex means, we can realize at home during some free moment.
His characteristics allow, also, interesting results for all the levels, from the rawest persons to whom they already have experience in the painting and the drawing.

Achievement process

1. - To begin, we must paint the image on the crystal. The bravest form would be to do straight, perhaps after having drawn some previous sketches. In our example, it is possible to see photographed, we have helped ourselves taking like an already existing image as basic. This way it is simpler since, on having done on crystal, we can "trace" any image that we like in spite of only putting it below.

A trick: Slightly very important on having traced: when we spend the image to the role, this one will turn out to be turned (as if we saw it in a mirror).Tal time does not matter for us, but if we want our final image "to the right" we will have to start by painting it pirouette. How?. Once let's have the elected image, we photocopy it asking them to do a copy to us "in mirror" and: decisive problem!.

2. - While we do in the crystal, we begin to prepare the role. It is cut to the select size (always major than the crystal) and point submerges in water without doubling it. This way it must be approximately ten minutes, until it has got soaked well. If we do not have a big receptacle, we can always use the bathtub.

To cut the role: The best way of cutting it to the size that we choose (of the sheet we can extract several roles to stamp) it is turning and tearing it with an abrecarta or a knife. So the rims will stay with an imperfect cut (with "beards") that will resemble a role done to hand.

3. - We extract the role of the water and drain it, drying the water excess between two dishcloths or between two roles that will do of blotters. The role will be ready when it is humid but without the surface turning out to be wet. Then, it will be the moment to put it on the crystal where the still fresh painting will be. All this with the very clean hands!.

On the role: For this skill we must use a thick and porous role (like those of watercolor).En the materials establishments artistic and stationeries will show us the varieties between which to choose.

4. - Now we must press with a soup spoon or, better, with a gum roller. It is necessary to give a uniform pressure for the whole surface, managing so the painting goes on from the crystal to the role.

The knife-edges of the crystal: If we press on the rims of the crystal in the role, they will remain pronounced, since the role is soft. This way our monotype will be alike even more the engravings because it will have the "bucketful" that is the mark that the engraving irons leave on having stamped them on the role.

5. - Carefully the role gets up and, if everything it has been fine, we will have pattern our monotype. It already only stays to clean the crystal to start again and to enjoy our graphic work in the house walls.

Finishing touches: As soon as the image was stamped, the identical forms can seem slightly clear to us. If it is like that, we can retouch them (once I dry the role) with some colors pencils and to complete this way the realized work.
